LINK Project proposal at Riverview Elementary
I will be interning at Riverview elementary where I will be working with children with special needs. This means I will be doing a lot of hands on work, working with the kids and helping them to learn. The mission at Riverview, with the children with special needs is to help the children learn and to guide them in daily skills such as, eating breakfast, manners, planning their days, and writing.
My mentor’s name is Kathy Tottis. She will be teaching me about the children, the way that they learn, and helping me to know how to create developmental appropriate curriculum. The best way that I can help Kathy is going to be to offer a hand in keeping the children under control and playing with the kids, and guiding them to learn new skills.
My goals academically to graduate high school and then to go to college to get my degree in special education. Being able to experience how things are work with children with special needs will give me experience that many students interested in pursuing this degree may not have.
After observing special needs children at River View Elementary, I decided that the best most beneficial project I could create for them for them would be an interactive book. I noticed that the students do a lot of interactive things. For example, in the morning they use pieces of paper with Velcro on the back to plan out their days, who’s going to have lunch, who’s brought a lunch, who will ride the bus home, and other schedules. After doing some further research, I think I know why this is done. I learned that pointing is a very basic skill. It is one of the first skills that babies have as well, and picking up a piece of paper and moving somewhere else is something that helps with motor skills. I immediately thought that an interactive book would be something fun and familiar to the children. I decided that I am going to continue to observe the behavior of the children and record my observations in a tiny notebook. I will design my interactive book on these observations. Much of my work on this project will have to be done outside of class so I plan on going home every night and working a little bit on my project. Below is the list of steps I will need to take to complete this project:
· Observe what the children do and what would be good to put in the book
· Find a good topic for the story
· Make a story outline
· Type the story and print out onto the special paper
· Make the pieces of paper with Velcro and design each page
· Add color and to the book
· Laminate the pieces that are going to have Velcro and the pages
· Bind the book together
· Make cover and back cover
I know that I will need paper, a sturdy type of paper, construction paper multicolored, a computer, Velcro, and a laminator. And then I will have to design each page of the book and also create a story for the book. I also think I will look at other interactive books for ideas and guidance.
When something does not go according to plan I will find the best solution; I will not give up though. I am pretty confident about my art skills so I know that if something goes wrong, I am more than capable of finding a solution. Completing this internship and this project and walking away with new knowledge that will help me for the degree I want to get.
