March 12, 2012 Today was the first day of my internship at Riverview elementary and I must say it was really fun. I got to play wit the kids and get to know them individually. I had the opportunity to experience the teacher working one o one with a few of the students as well.
I feel like I learned so much on my first day of interning. I learned a lot about the students as well as the teachers and the relationships between the students and teachers.
At the end of today my mentor told me that I did a really good job and that although it was my first day I seemed to jump right in and help go along with what was happening. I also feel like I am building relationships with not only with the students but the teachers as well and I am excited for all they have to teach me.
Today I worked with my mentor Kathy and a few other teachers as well. I got to follow a few of the teachers around as they took individual students to their classes, such as art and music, which was really fun.
Because the teachers need help as much as possible, I took initiative and helped the kids as much as possible. Things seemed to get a little crazy today, especially when there was only one teacher besides me and 3 students in a classroom. They all require different things and different amounts of attention and guidance and it is important to make sure that each student has that.
My goals for tomorrow are to spend time with different students to experience each students individual day and also to ask more questions. Since it was the first day I didn't have many but tomorrow I hope to have questions.
March 13, 2012today I got the opportunity to spend time getting to know a couple of the students better. I got to go to math class and P.E. with a student and I also got to play with her during her free period. Over all today was pretty productive, and I really am having a lot of fun getting to know the students and the teachers as well.
I learned about schedules and the different tools that they use to each individual student. It was very cool to see how much the teachers care and how much effort they put into making sure that the kids are organized and are given all the tools they need.
My biggest challenge today was keeping up with all the kids but I managed to get through it
today I worked with Kathy and the teachers, basically all of the special education teachers.
What surprised me is how accepted I feel. I really feel like part of the staff, not just a high school intern.
I really helped the teachers as much as I could today and I tried my hardest to do what I saw that needed to be done before I was asked which really helps Kathy a lot.
My goals for tomorrow are just to keep learning and dong what I have been doing
3/14/12
Today I got to teach the students a little bit, it was very fun to be teacher for a few minutes. I also went to Fort Lewis College with the kids and got to watch them play with the college students. It was a really good day.
Today I leaned more about the students and how they learn and how they act and also why they act like they act. I got a chance to talk to the teachers about the students; I also got to follow some of the students to class. It was great.
My success today was being told by the teachers how well I am doing and that I have teaching potential. It makes me want to work even harder.
Today I worked with the teachers and the students, same as days before.
I worked hard to connect and understand the kids. I really tried to bond and understand them today.
My goal for tomorrow is to just continue to do well. I am really trying my best I just want to continue to do that.
March 15, 2012today I worked with the kids. Because it's the beginning of my internship, I am basically trying to get to know the kids. So today I shadowed a couple of students as they went to class. The students are in the SLS program, but they still go to regular classes as well. Many of these students have a teacher that goes with them to class. I was able to see how these students work and how the teachers get them to work and cooperate. It was very nice to be able to experience this, mainly because I did not know what to expect when I began this internship, you think that teaching these students is easy, but in reality it the polar opposite. I got to help teach the students also, I got to help prompt and help some students do their work.
Today I learned that the students need help with manners, with school with a lot of aspects of their lives, but they are not incapable. They are very smart, many of them just need help, direction, but they can learn and they do. After talking to the teachers Ii learned that compared to a couple years ago, a majority of the students have changed an unbelievable amount, and seeing how some of the kids behave I can only imagine what they would have been like a couple years ago. Ii found this to be incredible. I imagined how the students would have acted a few years ago and wondered if I would have had enough patience to help them, Ii feel like I would but it would just be a huge challenge for me.
I feel as though I am really getting to know the students, what they are good at and what they need help with. So just getting to know them is turning out to be a success for me. A challenge for me was seeing that all the teachers have different ways of teaching, not all of them agree with each other and Ii heard that multiple times today, not letting that effect my experience was a little bit difficult but I tried.
I worked with a few of the teachers, but mostly I observed the teachers and the students.
What surprised me is how incredibly hard the teachers work to help the students, they all put so much into it, and they all care so much. It was amazing to see how close the students and teachers are, because the students are in the SLS program until 5thgrade. The teachers and students build close relationships, Ii couldn't help but think about how hard it would be when the students leave and go to middle school. I wondered if I will be able to handle that part.
I obviously had no clue what I was doing but I jumped in and tried to help the teachers teach as much as I could. I think that is about the only thing that I contributed.
Tomorrow my goal is to just help the teachers and keep trying to learn as much as I can.
March 16th, 2012today I just worked with the kids. I didn’t exactly work on anything today.
Today I learned that a few different teaching method that the teachers use to work with the students. Such as motivation tools, like using things that the students like to get them to do something. It is actually a very good technique; I have already seen it work multiple times.
For me today my successes were basically just basically not feeling overwhelmed. There was so much going on, so many students all doing different things, some behaving some not, and that could be overwhelming but for some reason it wasn’t for me, which is good.
I worked with a few teachers and some of the students, basically the same.
I just helped as much as I could. that's pretty much it.
Tomorrow my goals are the same as before I plan to just learn and help and help as much as possible.
March 19, 2012
Today Ii went into my internship, but began to feel sick and went home around 10:30.
March 20, 2012
today was a pretty laid back day. I helped a little bit with the kids but mostly I shadowed some more.
I learned that the you figure out very fast that each student will try to play a different game with you. When I say game I do not mean BINGO, I mean each student will try to basically test you, just to see what they can get away with and what they cant get away with, especially if you are new.
What was challenging for me was not falling for this, as soon as you let them get away with it; they continue to see how many times they can get away with it.
Nothing really surprised me today.
What I contributed is just another helping hand;
my goals for tomorrow are the same.
March 21, 2012
today I woke up real sick and called in sick to my internship.
March 22, 2012
Today Ii went to art class with a student, which of course for me was really fun. I also began to work on my project for exhibition. After getting an eel for what kind of teaching techniques the teachers use with the student Ii was able to really think about what my project will be.
I learned that Katy Tottis makes different material for each student, and I learned how much time and energy and effort not to mention money that is takes to cater to every individual students needs.
My success was getting to know Adam well enough to be able to be able to get him to do what he was asked to when the other teachers could not. This felt pretty awesome.
Today I worked with teachers and the students, as I have been. That is something that will not change.
What surprised me was the amount of materials that each student actually has. It's not like we're talking about one class here, were talking about individual work for math, science, history, and English. Imagine the amount of materials that could be used for those classes alone. Thinking about it will not get you t the actual amount of materials; I guess that kind of proves my point.
I contributed a helping hand; with these students the teachers seem to need all the help that they can get.
My goals for tomorrow are to get the supplies for my project and to start working on my project and also to get to the materials for my project as well.
Today was a half day for the students. Every Friday the students get a half day and the teachers have a meeting from 1:30 to 3:30. So that was a majority of my day.
That part of my day was the hardest part. Basically I just sat there and listened to information about autism and how the teachers can improve on helping the students. To me I found this all to be very interesting but it is hard for me to sit that long
